  5. J&FJ BAKER RUSSIAN CALF - BLACK - 1.8/2.0mm
    £23.68

    Out of stock

Over the last few decades, Russian Calf has developed a folk lore type reputation particularly since the discovery of the hides on the seabed of Plymouth Sound on the wreck of the Metta Catharina. Having received permission from the Duchy of Cornwall, these hides have been raised in small quantities ever since. Nowadays, the situation is too dangerous and diving and recovering of skins has now ceased.

Made form young English locally sourced Ox hides, J&FJ Baker & Co Ltd have undergone the development of replicating this historic leather. Pit tanned for some 14 months in three types of tree bark (Oak, Willow and Birch) and a minuscule amount of fish oil. A final dressing of dubbin and birch oil has resulted in a mellow, luxurious, distinctively smelling, well rounded, old fashioned looking piece of leather.

  7. J&FJ BAKER WAXED FLESH CALF - BLACK - 1.3/1.5mm
    £16.43

    Out of stock

All the calf skins are from locally bred herds. Following 2 weeks in the limeyard, they are pit tanned in Oak Bark for 3 months. The dressing slicked into the flesh side is a special recipe that has remained a secret within the Baker household since time in memorial.

Waxed calf was traditionally used in the manufacturing of riding and hunting boots. After a day’s hunting, the surfs or household staff would “bone” the front of the boots where the vamp has been blocked. To do this, they would use the fatty bone of a joint of meat that has been served to their employers and guests. As the vamp is used inside out, the boots will be particularly scratched as the rider had jumped fences and gates whilst chasing the prize. “Boning” allowed the boots to be re-oiled with the fatty tissues of the meat joint restoring it to its former glory!
